Rhys Bartlett
(MSc Candidate)
(MSc Candidate)
Rhys completed his BSc (Hons) in 2019 at Ontario Tech University (formerly UOIT). His interest in molecular biology comes from his older brother, a student in the UOIT graduating class of 2012, who would take him to lectures where he would learn about all the cool and awesome things we can do to cells to study their function. In his free time, Rhys likes playing video games, taking care of his pets (cat, axolotl, and fish), and pursuing his interest in aquascaping.

Mayowa Awe
(May 2023 - Present) Hi, my name is Mayowa and I am a Life Sciences student in my fourth year. I enjoy learning about how such small organisms can be used in more macroscopic ways. I also really enjoy working with microbes in the lab and I am so excited to be working in the Strap Lab. My future goal is to work in the medical field specifically with women's health and hopefully continue microbiology research in the medical area. Outside of my studies, I love to read and write, as well as travel.

Maryam Ali
(September 2023 - Present) I am a fourth year Biological Science student minoring in Sustainability Studies. After completing the Introduction to Microbiology and Immunology course I became very fascinated by microbes and their numerous uses in different fields. I am particularly interested in microbiology’s relevance in immunology, medical advancements, epidemiology, and pathology. I wish to work in the medical field. In the future, I hope to conduct my own research within the realm of microbiology and immunology. For these reasons, I am super excited to be doing research in the Strap lab! Outside of school, I enjoy reading, gaming, and binge-watching shows.

Evany Bernal
(September 2023 - Present) Hello, I am Evany Bernal. I am a pharmaceutical biotechnology student with a deep curiosity for microbiology and immunology. My interest in this field began during my second year of studies when I started to comprehend the complexity of microorganisms and their impact on human health. Knowing my struggles with asthma from childhood, I quickly understood the immense potential of these disciplines in the pharmaceutical field. My academic goal is to conduct research with a specific focus on drug discovery. I want to contribute to the development of novel medications that can enhance the quality of people’s lives in the same way that it did to my life. In my spare time, I also enjoy teaching science to children, writing short stories, and signing.
